Probably the best loved beer in Hawaii, as far as I can tell, for those who like more than the ubiquitous Keystone light. This is a full flavored lager with German undertones and a flavor that makes it recognizable from the first sip. Very much like Heineken, Becks and other imported lagers with a unique taste, Steinlager has it in spades. This New Zealand beer has been coming to the islands for a long time and is available everywhere. It is the go to beer for those who like beer and forgo the light American beers like the plague.
Here is something I didn’t know: Hawaii is currently the number one market for Steinlager outside of New Zealand, especially with the introduction of Steinlager Pure in 2007, “Brands are cyclical and 10 years ago Steinlager was a lot more popular than it is now”. Steinlager came to the Islands in the 70’s at about the same time as Heineken and a few others. ”. They cleverly sponsored canoe races and other advertising ploys to seat themselves firmly in the Hawaiian market.
It has slightly higher alcohol content at 5%, which gave it that slight edge over the competition. I personally don’t drink American mass produced lagers, so I tried it first on my maiden trip to Hawaii in 1980. Been a fan ever since.
Around here the cats love it.
Just a good tasting beer, and readily available here in Hawaii.
