Now, this is an interesting brew, the likes of which I have never tried! Pineapple, can you believe that? Maui Brewing Co. has been a favorite of mine since I first tried the Coconut Porter and the Bikini Lager. Both of those were exceptional brews. I just found this one yesterday and didn’t know what to think about the fist smell and sip until I read the label. Brewed with real pineapple juice and you can smell and taste it in spades.
Not the world’s biggest fan of fruit juice in beer but I have to say they pulled this one off. I usually can’t get past the second beer for a lot of recent tries for Island craft beer but this one I could.
Opaque golden with minimal head. Smell is definitely pineapple and it is a bit “fizzy” with some sweetness derived from the juice.
Commercial Description: “An unfiltered, freshly handcrafted American-style wheat ale infused with Maui Gold Pineapple. Our crisp and refreshing wheat ale is lightly hopped to allow the fruity sweetness of the pineapple to shine. The yeast stays in suspension making the ale traditionally cloudy.” — Maui Brewing Co.
I continue to be impressed with Maui Brewing Co. This beer could have gone very wrong and didn’t. Adding pineapple to a wheat beer could have gone way too sweet but the balance was there and the craft of the brew master quite evident. I liked it, although it would not be a go to beer on a regular basis. Interesting and worth a try if you find it. I give it a yes in all but making it a regular fare category.
