Well, this is a first. I have already reviewed Kona Breweries Long Board for this site. I had the bottled version bought in Hilo on the other side of the Island. Yesterday, an old high school friend dropped by with some tall boys from Kona. Kona brewery sells a lot of beer so they have three breweries on the Mainland that do all their bottles. The brewery in Kona, supplies the cans and kegs for the Kona area. I think anything in a can around the islands is also produced in Kona.
Well, the first couple sips of the cold canned version did not have the same level of bready, yeast taste I didn’t like in the bottle. This was better and really hit the spot on a hot day down by the ocean. I have always said, Lager is harder to get right than ales and there is definitely a difference in the batch I had from the bottle. Lager takes twice as long to make as ales in general and if something goes wrong, you can’t fix it like with ales.
Now I would really like to try my favorite from Kona Brewery, Koko Brown, in Kona to see the difference. I like it in bottle form so maybe I will be even more impressed with the local made version. Maybe now that I back tracked on the bad review of their flag ship beverage, I will get a tour of the brewery without being tossed into a vat. Planning a trip there soon.
