Scott will be visiting this brewery soon, a long drive across the big island, but he will get there. At that time he will have much more to say, till then let me give you a little history and talk about the beers that are made here.
A pop and son operation started on the big island in 1995 is now the leading seller of craft beer in the Hawaiian Islands. Big Wave and Fire Rock were the two original beers with Longboard following shortly after.
They normally have about ten different beers on tap at the brewery but what you find in other places will vary. In the pubs and restaurants on the islands you will most certainly find the Big Wave, Fire Rock and Longboard, and possibly Koko Brown, Pipeline Poter and Wailua Wheat.
Thanks to their partnerships with U.S. breweries Kona beer is sold across the states and to 9 other countries. The breweries are located in Oregon, Washington and New Hampshire. The brewing is done under strict guidance by Kona.
To get these beers, the made in Hawaii ones, first hand and out of a keg try one of their Pubs. Try Kona Brewing Company’s Kailua-Kona Pub or the Koko Marina Pub at the Koko Marina Center. Travelers coming into or leaving Honolulu, with a few minutes to spare, find the Air Pub, some Kona beer will be waiting for you.
I bought a variety twelve pack of bottles, brewed in Oregon, to give these beers a try. Maybe not the best beer I have ever had but I will definitely have a couple of these on hand for my next get together with friends. It’s a very nice, and affordable, way to give my friends a taste of island beer. I like a good 7-10 dollar beer from time to time, but finding something this good in my price range makes me smile.
The Castaway has not been mentioned yet. It’s included in the variety pack and we have a review on it.
