Here are the beers that Big Isalnd Brewhaus has to offer:
Dark Side Wheat, Red Sea of Cacao, Mandarin Gold, Dark Sabbath, Octoberfiesta Gold.
This was the first row of samplers I tried. Wonderful and I then went on to have the second board of samplers. Now, to be fair, this is too much taste explosion to be on mark with any kind of proper taste test. I started to love everything by the second board. The second board of samples included: Overboard IPA, Paniolo Ale [Panilolo is a Portuguese word for cowboy], Golden Sabbath, White Mountain Porter, Red Giant Ale, Pau Hana Pale Ale.
I have pictures of the two boards I ordered and you can see them here. I really need to go thirteen times more to do a pint of each alone. A bit of a drive, so that will take time. I got my very nice server Kelli, to give me an older paper menu and saw a ginger brew that was not available anymore. That’s a total shame since we grow ginger by the ton here on the Big Island and I would love to try that. The absolute best ginger brew I ever had was from Japan and I would hope we could compete.
When we had finished our beers and food in the restaurant, we headed out back to the brewery. There was a wonderful aroma of toasted coconut wafting through the building. They were making a batch of this nice stout at the time. I got a couple pictures of the toasted coconut floating on top as the brew master stirred with a paddle. This is one of the three beers they have in bottles for purchase there and in stores in Hawaii. This Porter is 5.8 abv and has strong coffee and coconut flavors I find delightful. Black in color with a nice tan head. I find this to be about the strength a good stout needs to be and the added tones of chocolate and good, balanced hops, make me happy. This is what a Hawaiian Porter should be.
The coffee and coconut we are famous for on the Big Island are the perfect choices for flavoring this beer. I usually judge beer by how often I would purchase and drink. There are a lot of factors that go into that including price. Hawaiian craft beers are not cheap so it has to be good to recommend it. This one is a rousing yes and I will look for it at my local grocery store. I will be doing much more on the beers of this brewer but wanted to get the site started with this wonderful find.
