I live in Hawaii where we grow mountains of ginger. If you like ginger and I do, you will like this. Fruity, Ginger, Sweet, Spicy, Medium-bodied. This is a delightful, delicious ale. Very well balanced between hoppiness, sweet ginger spiciness and malt. Excellent on the drinkable side too. Thought I got a hint of coffee on first smell too. I bought this import at my local liquor store in Hilo. Kadota liquor is the only true, non-chain location to get interesting imports in town. This is where I get all my Japanese imports and where I will go back to for all the Hitachino beers. This one and the Red Rice, were the first two I bought again and that is saying something for me. They are quite expensive here but are so outstanding, I don’t care.
Commercial description.
Japan- Herbed / Spiced Beer- 8% ABV. “A dose of fresh ginger roots added to the brewkettle creates an intriguing mix of ginger, malt-sweetness, and citrus-like aromas and flavors. Hoppy dryness is very subdued with ginger-sweet-spicey notes dominating throughout to the very finish.”
I was not enjoying the beer I was reviewing and by the second one, just had to pour it out and grab the one Hitachino I had in the fridge. I will have some poor reviews of certain beers by my local breweries on this site. Very difficult to find something negative to say about anything from these masters of the art form. Arigato gozaimasu Hitachino San! Matta NE!
I have a lot more to say about the Hitachino Nest beers on my Beer Japan site. It soon becomes evident I recommend everything this brewery has to offer.
