Many Hawaiian craft breweries that distribute out of state contract with breweries on the mainland in order to minimize costs. But Maui Brewing Company, located in Lahaina, is unique in that founder Garrett Marrero brews and produces 100 percent of his product on the islands. “We want to support local agriculture and the local economy and keep our neighbors employed,” he said.
Maui Brewing is exceptionally dedicated to the use of local products in their beers. Even their cans are made locally, which supports the island economy as well as reduces shipping costs, and their upcoming seasonal releases incorporate distinctive local flavors like ginger, crystal papaya, and breadfruit—a limited-edition collaboration release with fellow brewer and Maui admirer Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head. If a company can buy local and still produce a quality product they are worth looking into. Scott just gave Bikini Blonde Lager a big thumbs up his last visit to Maui Brewing. You might also like the Big Swell IPA or their CoCoNut Porter. The Mana Wheat would be a good choice also. Scott supports this local brewery doing very well with local products. Plan a visit and see for yourself.
