Kona Brewing Co. is one of the three breweries on my island here in Hawaii. I will do a whole piece on the brewery separately. Today I am having the Fire Rock Pale Ale and it is quite nice. I was surprised to learn that all the bottle beers from Kona were actually produced on the West Coast. I learned this chatting with the brewer at Mehana on my last visit there and didn’t know that fact. One of my favorite seasonal brews from Kona is the Hapa Brown with toasted coconut. Thought I was drinking Hawaiian made nut brown ale, but I guess not. They produce the locally consumed beers in keg form, at the brewery in Kona.
This one pours a copper red with distinct hoppiness that first reminds one of an IPA. It settles in smoother than an IPA after the fist couple tastes. This is definitely a richer taste than the average pale ale. A few people on rate beer called it bland. Boy, I don’t see that at all. There are a lot of pale ale’s that could be that in spades, but not this one. I guess that’s why I don’t like to go overboard and analyze a beer to death. It boils down to, do I like it, would I buy it again and is it something I would drink regularly. The answer to all the above is yes.

Notes/Commercial Description:
Fire Rock Pale Ale is crisp, refreshing “Hawaiian-style” pale ale. Its signature copper color results from the unique blend of specialty roasted malts. The pronounced citrus-floral hop aroma comes from the liberal amounts of Galena, Cascade & Mt.Hood hops added to each brew.
Our friend James Marshall had this to say about Fire Rock Pale Ale.
