It’s good news for Oahu, then again maybe not. It depends on how you look at it. Jimmy Buffett’s place is closing down and I am sure they will be missed. In it’s place will be Maui Brewing Co.
The location is the Holiday Inn Resort Waikiki Beachcomber. For the time being Buffett’s place will stay open operated by Terry’s Handcrafted Restaurants LLC. The restaurant will close once the multimillion dollar renovation starts, sometime in the fall.
Once the renovation is complete Maui Brewing will partner with Bill Terry, Chris Thibaut and the Outrigger Enterprise Group. The new venture will be called Maui Brewing Waikiki LLC.
It was about a year ago Jimmy Buffett’s at the Beachcomber was taken over by Outrigger Enterprises Group. After renovations they reopened the restaurant. The Buffett group had asked for early termination of their lease and it was granted. Outrigger picked up the lease and took over.
Buffett’s place opened in 2009 and at one time was the home for a local Saturday morning radio show. Operated by the Margaritaville’s Restaurant Group, other locations are still alive and well in at least 21 other locations in places like Mexico, U.S. and the Caribbeans.
The current restaurant, before the renovation, still offers fine food and live entertainment nightly, at least through July. While you are there don’t miss the Honolulu Surfing Museum.
Let me add this to my admin’s post. Anytime a fine tuned op like Maui Brewing Co. take over anything in the Islands, it is a good thing. Jimmy should stick to the keys where he is a presence. Maui Brewing is a presence here and a very good brewer of suds. I am all for anything they want to expand into. I bought a 4 pack of the coconut porter today and it is still one of the best canned brews around. Good on ya, Maui Brewing Co. !!! Scott
