Best Beer of the Month, Kona Big Wave, so says Chris Morris from NJ.com. He is talking about a trip to the Bahamas, that he does every several years, and drinking Kaliks beer. For some reason it was worse than usual this year and he opted for a beer from Kona instead. Scott is a little less kind to his island’s brewery when it comes to bottles. In bottle form, it was made on the mainland and not in Hawaii. The Longboard lager is a miss but the others in the shot are worth a try if they don’t come too dear, money wise. Too bad there is nothing interesting to him from the islands on the opposite side of the world.
So, from a New Jersey beer guy, when sinking your toes in the sand, think Kona. At least that’s the impression I get, and nothing wrong with that, a Kona sampler 12 pack sits real nice on ice beside my pool in Arizona.
The fact that the beer isn’t actually that good was proved last summer, when I picked up a few six packs at the only store within a few hundred miles that sells it. I drank it on a warm day, sitting poolside with some island music playing in the background. It just wasn’t the same.
Luckily for me – and for everyone else – there’s plenty of other beers that fill this void. Not only are they perfect for those hot summer days down the shore, but they’re actually good beers, too. Amongst my favorites: Kona Big Wave Golden Ale.
Kona Brewing is on Kailua Kona, Hawaii, and somehow everything they put out has that island taste to it. It pours a light golden color with a large, fluffy white head and moderate carbonation. Retention and lacing are both on par. Read More.
